From the Classroom to Careers: Students Explore Opportunities at the Trident Regional Career Exploration Fair

Middle and high school students from Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties recently gathered for the Trident Regional Career Exploration Fair, a hands-on event designed to introduce them to career opportunities right in their own backyard. This event plays a vital role in shaping the future workforce by exposing students to industries they may have never considered, ensuring they are prepared for the next steps in their education and careers.

Engaging students at a younger age is critical. Individual Graduation Plans (IGPs) begin as early as eighth grade, guiding students toward coursework that aligns with their career interests. By helping students make informed decisions early on, this event ensures they are better positioned for success, whether they enter the workforce directly or pursue additional training and education.

“We want our students, our future workforce, to understand what’s available in our region,” said Kevin Sheilley, President & CEO of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce. “I love that we get to partner with our school systems and businesses to make this opportunity available so our kids know all the things available in their future.”

The event featured interactive experiences that allowed students to engage with local employers and learn about key industries across the tri-county region. These firsthand experiences not only sparked curiosity but also helped students visualize potential career paths. From advanced manufacturing and healthcare to technology and skilled trades, the fair showcased the wide range of opportunities available locally.

“These students’ talent is in demand,” said Chad Vail, Work-Based Learning Partnership Coordinator for Charleston County School District. “That’s the headline of the day. Employers are excited to be here to meet their future workforce and help them discover the opportunities that await them.”

The success of this event is built on strong partnerships between school districts, economic development organizations, nonprofits and local businesses. With the region’s workforce needs growing, these collaborations ensure a strong talent pipeline, aligning education with industry demands.

“There’s so much opportunity in the tri-county area, so we need to get involved earlier,” said Michelle McDonald, Deputy Director of Existing Industry & Workforce Development for Dorchester County Economic Development. “If you want to make sure students are making smart, informed decisions, you’ve got to have events like the Trident Regional Career Exploration Fair and have the industries involved.”

As the Charleston region continues to grow, events like this play a key role in workforce development. By connecting students with industries early, the Trident Regional Career Exploration Fair helps build a stronger, more prepared talent pool, ensuring a thriving business community for years to come.
