The Advocates: North Charleston Revisits Plans for Future

In cities like North Charleston, growth and development are constants, reshaping communities, business landscapes and quality of life. This dynamic environment is why regular updates to the city’s Comprehensive Plan are so important.

The city is currently in the process of reviewing its ‘PRIME’ Comprehensive Plan, as required by the State of South Carolina. North Charleston has experienced rapid growth over the last decade, attracting new residents and businesses while facing challenges in housing, traffic and infrastructure. By reviewing and updating the Comprehensive Plan, the city can assess current needs, reevaluate priorities and realign its goals to better serve its expanding population.

What does this mean for you?

For residents, this means a commitment to a high standard of living, including access to attainable housing, enhanced public spaces and efficient transportation.

For businesses, the promise of a stable and supportive environment helps foster a reliable workforce and an appealing community for both customers and employees.

North Charleston’s review of its Comprehensive Plan is more than an administrative exercise; it’s a crucial opportunity to shape the city’s future. It is through this intentional effort that projects like Lowcountry Rapid Transit and efforts to create more “missing middle” housing will become a successful reality.

The City of North Charleston, in collaboration with BCDCOG, will be taking feedback on the current plan to inform a draft addendum. Citizens will have an opportunity to review and provide feedback on the draft sometime in the second quarter of 2025, which the City Council would then review and adopt.

The Government Relations team will continue to support North Charleston and the BCDCOG with their effort and keep you informed as progress is made.
