The SC House of Representatives passed the Clementa C. Pinckney Hate Crimes Act earlier this year 84-31. The Clementa C. Pinckney Hate Crimes Act creates penalty enhancements for individuals already convicted of a violent crime if the violent crime was committed against a victim due to their race, color, religion, sex, gender, national origin, sexual orientation, or physical or mental disability. Our Chamber has long supported passage of a hate crimes bill. We believe to maintain South Carolina’s reputation as one of the best states in the nation for business, quality of life and future prosperity, we must join 48 other states that presently have hate crimes statutes.
The SC Senate passed the Clementa C. Pinckney Hate Crimes Act out of the full Senate Judiciary Committee last week. All the Charleston Region Senators that sit on the Senate Judiciary Committee voted in favor of moving the bill to the Senate floor. The Senate is in perfunctory session this week but will get back to the regular calendar the week after. The Charleston Metro Chamber will continue to push for passage of H. 3014. Our inability to protect all of our citizens is an economic and talent development liability that negatively impacts current and future generations in realizing equal opportunities to live, learn and earn in South Carolina.
Please join us in thanking the Lowcountry Legislators who have voted in support of the Hate Crimes legislation.
