Honoring Veterans and Their Lasting Impact on Charleston

This Veterans Day, we pause to honor the extraordinary individuals who have made incredible sacrifices for our nation and have chosen Charleston as their home. With more than 75,000 veterans, along with thousands of active-duty personnel and military retirees, the Charleston region is deeply shaped by the talents, sacrifices and contributions of our military community. Their presence is a testament to Charleston’s long-standing role in our nation’s defense and a source of pride and strength for our local businesses and residents.

Veterans as Cornerstones of the Charleston Community

Veterans bring a wealth of experience, skills and perspectives that enrich every aspect of life in Charleston. Their commitment to service doesn’t end when they leave the military; it continues in their roles as business leaders, educators, healthcare professionals, entrepreneurs and community advocates. These individuals remain active contributors, deeply invested in the success of their neighbors and the prosperity of our region. In choosing Charleston as their home, veterans forge lasting connections that strengthen our communities, support local industry and contribute to the region’s unique character and vitality.

Economic Impact of the Military Community

The contributions of the military community in Charleston reach far beyond individual stories—they are a powerful force driving our economy. Statewide, the military community generates an annual economic impact of $34.3 billion, with the Charleston region alone accounting for $12.7 billion. One in every nine jobs across South Carolina is tied directly or indirectly to military presence, reinforcing how military service members, veterans and their families shape our economic landscape. Local businesses benefit from the unique expertise veterans bring to the workforce, making them indispensable assets to our region.

Anchored by Strategic Military Installations

The Charleston area’s significance to national security has been long-standing. Since 1670, Charleston’s deep harbor and strategic location have played critical roles in defending the country and supporting global military efforts. Today, facilities like Joint Base Charleston, which supports operations worldwide, contribute an annual economic impact of $10.9 billion statewide, with $8.3 billion benefiting the Charleston region directly. The Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC), one of only two Navy cyber mission engineering centers, plays a vital role in our nation’s cyber defenses. Additionally, the Coast Guard Sector Charleston and the Army Corps of Engineers make annual economic contributions of $261.6 million and $61.6 million, respectively, providing jobs, bolstering infrastructure, and supporting regional growth.

A Community of Appreciation and Support

As one of the top 10 states for military density, South Carolina is uniquely positioned to honor and support its military community and Charleston leads the way. From locally-owned businesses to large corporations, employers in Charleston recognize the immense value veterans add, fostering an environment that respects and elevates those who have served. The spirit of support is evident in Charleston’s strong business ties with veterans, DoD civilians and military retirees, whose contributions reach every corner of our region.

A Lasting Legacy of Service

On Veterans Day, the Chamber proudly honors our veterans and acknowledges the enduring impact they have on our community. Their dedication, resilience and pursuit of excellence not only safeguard our nation but enrich the lives of everyone in Charleston. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our veterans for their service and for continuing to shape Charleston as a thriving, resilient and supportive community. Thank you to every veteran who has made Charleston their home—our region is better because of you.
