Annual MLK Breakfast Summit Brings Together Lowcountry Leaders to Reflect on Dr. King’s Legacy

The YWCA Greater Charleston and the City of Charleston’s MLK Breakfast Summit, held on Thursday, January 16, at the Charleston Gaillard Center, brought together business, civic and community leaders to honor the lasting legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This annual event serves as a powerful reminder of the progress made toward justice and equality, as well as the work that remains to be done.

Attendees heard from Charleston County School District students, who shared reflections on their personal connections to his vision for a more just society. The event also recognized Timothy Ascue of Ascue’s Auto Body and Paint Shop with the prestigious Joseph P. Riley Jr. Vision Award for his dedication to service and community leadership.

The keynote address was delivered by Trevor Saunders, Vice President and General Manager of David J. Joseph, a Nucor Company and a Charleston native. Saunders captivated the audience with his insights on this year’s theme, “Until Justice Just Is,” urging those in attendance to move beyond ideological discussions of justice and pursue tangible action. His remarks served as both a challenge and a call to action for individuals and organizations to actively engage in the fight for justice and equality.

Several members of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce were present at the event, taking part in this incredible celebration of Dr. King’s work. The summit highlighted the importance of collective efforts in advancing social change and inspired attendees to continue striving toward Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community, where justice and equality are realities for all.

As the community reflects on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the MLK Breakfast Summit serves as a crucial opportunity to renew commitments to making meaningful progress toward justice, understanding, and unity in Charleston and beyond.
