In 1773, we were formed to drive commerce. While we as a Chamber, and as a community, have evolved significantly over the last 250 years, we have deep roots as the longest continually-operating chamber of commerce in the nation. Throughout the years, we have convened businesses, governments, civic organizations and citizens to collectively respond to our region’s greatest opportunities, and most pressing challenges.
Although we have been around for a long time, we know we are just getting started. We plan to honor and learn from our last 250 years, while proactively focusing on initiating, advocating and empowering our region to ready itself for the next 250+ years of prosperity.
At the core of our work are dedicated volunteer leaders and their supporting businesses and organizations that are passionate about advancing the Charleston region. At the kick off of our 250th year, we worked with partners to create and install an iconic piece of artwork in our headquarters. The design, centered around the region’s longest living live oak tree – the Angel Oak, pays homage to the deep-rooted history of our Chamber and is designed to thank every volunteer and member who has supported us, since the beginning.
In our 250 years, we have a lot of leaders to thank for the continued service and dedication to our region, including the fearless Past Chair’s that have helped paved the way to 250.
The Chamber earned Chamber of the Year in 2018, which is the nation’s only award recognizing the leadership role chambers have in their communities and excellence in operations, member services and community leadership.
"We could not have accomplished this without the support of our dedicated members, our phenomenal group of volunteer leaders and our hard-working staff members who are passionate about the work that we do," said Bryan Derreberry, Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce president and CEO. "We are thankful for our business community and region who have been so supportive."
